Red-Capped Mangabey

Red-Capped Mangabey

Red-Capped Mangabeys are a type of Old World monkey, also known as White-Collared Mangabeys. They are native to mangroves, swamps and rainforests around Western and Central Africa including Nigeria, Gabon and Cameroon. They are a mostly arboreal primate, meaning they spend a lot of time in the trees. In the wild, they live in large groups led by a dominant male and are diurnal, spending the day searching for food and sleeping at night.

They are omnivores, mostly feeding on vegetation, seeds and fruits but will also eat insects and bird eggs. These mangabeys are also nicknamed the “four-eyed monkey” due to their striking white eyelids, which they flutter and use to communicate with one another. The Red-Capped Mangabey is classed as ‘endangered’ by the IUCN red list, with populations declining due to habitat loss and hunting.
