Lion-Tailed Macaque

Lion-Tailed Macaque

The lion-tailed macaque is a type of Old World monkey, characterised by a large grey mane that surrounds their face and a long black tail that resembles the tail of a lion. These macaques can only be found in the Western Ghats mountains of South-West India. They usually live in groups consisting of 30-40 individuals, led by a dominant male. Lion-tailed macaques can produce 17 different vocalisations, which they use to communicate, along with facial expressions, tail positioning and body language. They have large, calloused pads on their rears which allow them to sit and sleep comfortably up in the trees. The lion-tailed macaque is classed on the IUCN red list as “endangered” with less than 2,500 individuals remaining in the wild. Their population is continuing to decline due to habitat loss.
