Cotton-Top Tamarin

Cotton-Top Tamarin

The cotton-top tamarin is native to rainforests in north-west Colombia. They are very small monkeys, reaching less than 25cm in height and are easily distinguished by a large tuft of white hair on their heads. They are one of the most endangered South-American primates with less than 2,000 individuals remaining in the wild. They are classed as “critically endangered” by the IUCN red list with their population decreasing due to habitat loss and illegal wildlife trading. They are omnivores, feeding on fruits, vegetation, nectar, tree sap, insects and sometimes small birds or reptiles. The average lifespan of cotton-tops in the wild is 10-12 years, but can live for over 20 years in captivity.
