Rabbits are not rodents – they are part of the lagomorph family, which consists of just rabbits, hares and pikas. There are 75 breeds of rabbit currently recognised by the British Rabbit Council, all which derive from the wild European Rabbit. The Flemish Giant Rabbit is the largest breed of rabbit reaching up to 4ft in length.
The Netherland Dwarf rabbit is the smallest breed. Rabbits are herbivores meaning they only eat plants. A domestic rabbit’s diet should consist of 80% hay and grasses. Their teeth never stop growing! Rabbits need to chew and gnaw to prevent their teeth from overgrowing. They are very social animals and live in large underground burrow systems, called warrens, in the wild. Domestic rabbits can live anywhere from 8-12 years on average with good care.
