Ball Python

Ball Python

Ball Pythons are native to tropical grasslands and savannas in western and central Africa. The name ball python refers to the way the snake curls up into a tight ball if threatened. They are also commonly known as Royal pythons, as rulers once wore them as live jewellery. Females grow larger than males, reaching up to 5ft, whereas males generally grow to 3ft. Their diet mainly consists of small mammals and birds. They have multiple ‘heat pits’ along the sides of their mouth which help the python to detect heat from prey. They are nocturnal, meaning they are most active at night. In captivity, ball pythons can live for 30+ years.
