The Brazilian rainbow boa can be found in central South America where they live in grasslands, swamp lands and humid woodlands. They generally grow to about 4-6ft, with females often being larger than males. These snakes are brownish red in colour.
They are called ‘rainbow boas’ due to their iridescent scales which refract light, creating a rainbow effect on the snake’s skin. Their diet consists of small mammals, birds and some small lizards or amphibians. They are not venomous, they are constrictors, meaning they squeeze their prey by coiling their body tightly around it. They can live for up to 20 years in captivity.
