Ferret

Ferret

Ferrets are part of the mustelid family. Domestic ferrets are descendants of the European polecat. Ferrets were domesticated over 2500 years ago for hunting small mammals like rabbits and rodents as their lean bodies could easily fit through small burrows. The name ferret comes from the Latin word “furittus” which translates to ‘little thief’. A female ferret is known as a ‘jill’ and a male ferret is known as a ‘hob’. Baby ferrets are called ‘kits’. A group of ferrets is known as a ‘business’. The average lifespan of a ferret is about 8 years.
