Shetland Pony

Shetland Pony

Shetland ponies are one of the smallest members of the equine family. They originated on the Shetland islands of Scotland thousands of years ago. They have adapted to the rugged climate by having larger hooves for navigating boggy or uneven ground and a thick hairy coat to keep them warm and dry. A female horse is called a ‘mare’ and an intact male horse is called a ‘stallion’. Shetland ponies can live for 30+ years.
